Want to earn more but can’t commit to a full-time job? Welcome to the world of side hustles, which includes freelancing and gig work. These are jobs you take on outside of your main commitments (like school, NS, or your full-time job). They can be flexible, skill-based, and even fun. Most importantly, they help you boost your cash flow.
What’s the difference between freelancing and gig work?
- Freelancing: You offer your skills directly to clients (think tutoring, photography, design). You also set your own rates.
- Gig work: Platform-based, short-term jobs with fixed tasks and rates (like food delivery or ride-hailing). You don’t get to set your own rates.
They all serve one goal: helping you earn extra without locking you into a rigid 9-to-6 schedule. For the rest of the articles, they’ll be collectively referred to as side hustles.
Types of side hustles worth exploring:
- Freelance services: Writing, design, content creation, tutoring, fitness instructor, coding, admin support, data entry, photography/videography. This is perfect if you’ve got a skill others need.
- Retail/ service work: Being a server in cafes, restaurants, banquets, or retail staff in bookstores, supermarkets, clothing shops.
- Delivery/rideshare work: Foodpanda, Grab, or Lalamove jobs with flexible hours.
- Selling stuff online: Selling your preloved items, handmade crafts over Shopee, Carousell or TikTok shops
- Microtasks and surveys: Sites like Toluna or Milieu Surveys for quick tasks, though payouts can be small.
- Passive options: Like renting out gear (e.g., cameras) or affiliate marketing via social media.
Is this side hustle right for you?
Answer these questions before diving in:
| Question | If yes… | If no… |
|---|---|---|
| Do I have 5-10 hours a week to spare without burning out? | You’re good to go on time-heavy gigs like delivery or retail work. | Look for flexible options like surveys or passive income setups. |
| Does this side hustle use a skill I already have? | Great! You can start earning faster with a minimal learning curve. | Consider investing time in learning or start with simpler tasks. |
| Can I start with little to no upfront cost? | Great! There’s less pressure to earn back your investment. | Budget wisely or delay starting until you're financially ready. |
| Will the earnings help me reach a goal (e.g., $300/month for savings)? | Then it’s worth the time and effort! | Rethink the hustle or combine it with another for better returns. |
| Have I checked if it’s legal or affects CPF/ self-employment status? | Go ahead and plan your next step. | Do a quick check with IRAS or CPF before you commit. |
| Have I checked if my employer allows side hustles? | Nice! Just make sure your side hustle doesn’t clash with work duties or company policies. | It’s still worth checking. Even if it seemed like a hard no, some exceptions or side arrangements might be possible. |
Remember: not every side hustle has to be your passion project. Sometimes it’s just about having extra cash so you can reach your financial goals faster.
Also, before you turn your side hustle into your main hustle, ask yourself: Does it pay like a full-time job and offer long-term growth? Some gigs, like delivery or ride-hailing, might bring in decent cash now, but they often come with no career ladder, and no stability, and should you fall sick or get injured and become unable to work, that means no income for days or weeks. If there’s no path to progress or upskill, it’s better to treat it as a boost, and not your main rice bowl.
