Ready to move out? Here's what to know first

Thinking of getting your own place? Maybe you’re dreaming of a BTO flat with a walk-in wardrobe, or just can’t tahan squeezing in the same bedroom with your siblings anymore. For some, it’s about having space to start a new chapter with a partner. For others, it's the milestone that marks real ‘adulting’. But moving out isn’t just something you randomly decide to do — it takes some financial planning.
How do you know you’re ready?
It’s not just about whether you want to move. It’s about whether you can — emotionally, practically, and financially. Independent living means bills, responsibilities, and maybe some lonely days, too.
What to check before you move out:
- Steady income: Can you pay rent, food, utilities, and still save monthly? (See 50/30/20 budgeting rule) If income is unstable or on the lower end, consider waiting for a bit before moving out.
- Emotional readiness: Can you handle being independent, managing groceries, or fixing a leak? If the thought of cooking dinner every night or troubleshooting a Wi-Fi issue stresses you out, it might be worth prepping yourself before moving out.
- Support system: Even if you move out, who can you call when things go wrong, and how far are they? Having reliable people nearby (or at least a phone call away) can make a big difference, whether it’s for emotional support or practical help like last-minute pet-sitting or a ride to the clinic.
- Long-term plan: Are you moving temporarily or starting a home ownership journey? Knowing your end goal affects everything - from how much you spend on furniture to whether you take up a rental or save for a BTO. Without a clear plan, it’s easy to overspend on short-term comforts that don’t align with your future goals.
