Smart ways to save using discounts promos and instalment plans

In spite of your best efforts, you might not be 100% there in terms of managing your spending. If that’s the case, don’t beat yourself up. Just shift focus: if you're going to spend, make sure it’s on needs, and do it the smart way.

  1. Time your purchases: If you need a new pair of sneakers because your old ones are worn out, wait for a sale. It is pretty established by now that major sales events happen like clockwork — 6/6, 7/7, 8/8, etc.
  2. Stack your discounts: Use cashback apps to get some money back on your essential purchases.
  3. Look out for student/NSF promos and discounts: Many essentials like transport, meals, healthcare, and even fitness come with student or NSF discounts. Whether it’s concession MRT fares, cheaper lunch sets, or discounted gym access, use the perks while you can. Every dollar saved here means more buffer for other must-haves.
  4. Join mailing lists and follow brands on Telegram/IG to get promo codes: Only do this if it doesn’t tempt you into buying frivolous things that you have no use for. Create a separate email for these mailing lists so you don’t get spammed.
  5. Take advantage of interest-free instalments for income tax and MediSave: If you're self-employed or a gig worker, cash flow can get tight. That’s why it's worth using monthly GIRO instalments for big-ticket obligations like income tax or compulsory MediSave contributions. These are interest-free, officially offered, and help you manage payments across the year without strain.

Even when you're spending on needs, there's a smart way to do it. Time your essential buys, stack your discounts, use student perks, and utilize interest-free installment plans wherever possible. You're not just saving; you're making every dollar work harder. And over time, those smart moves can lead to serious savings.
