How to protect your emergency fund

You’ve built your emergency fund — well done! That’s a huge step in the right direction.
Now your mission is simple: keep it safe.
It might be tempting sometimes. A sale pops up, or your friends jio you for a surprise trip to Hong Kong. But that $1.5k in your ‘Emergency Only’ account has a bigger job: it’s your safety net when life throws curveballs.
(Still, nothing wrong with peeking at the balance now and then for some good vibes.)
What does it mean to keep my emergency fund liquid?
‘Liquid’ just means your money should be easy to access without penalties or long waits. Ideally, you can withdraw it within a few working days. There’s no need to break a fixed deposit early or rush to sell your investments.
But being too accessible can be dangerous. That’s why we strategise to protect it from impulse.
Strategies:
- Separate bank app: Use a separate high-interest savings account for your emergency fund and try not to download the bank app. Your money is still liquid, but you’re making it a bit more leceh to spend it.
- No card link: Don’t attach an ATM or debit card to that account. Again, it makes it more troublesome to spend the money.
- Label it clearly: A label like ‘DO NOT TOUCH — FOR EMERGENCIES ONLY’ can do wonders.
Keeping your emergency fund out of sight and out of mind will protect it from yourself. But keeping it liquid will still save you when real trouble hits.
