How to review your budget every month

It’s tempting to set your budget once and be like, ‘K, good enough.’, but you shouldn’t do that. A budget is a living plan. Monthly check-ins (or quarterly, if you’re confident) can help you stay on track, spot leaks, and adjust for real life.

Here’s how to do it in 4 quick steps:

  1. Track what you spent

If you were tracking your spending religiously, you’ll now have a good idea of where your money actually went.

  2. Compare against your budget

Did you overspend on your ‘Wants’ category because you couldn’t resist the temptation of a good sale? Did you end up not saving 20%? We listen and we don’t judge, but you should still take note.

  3. Make adjustments

Shift money between categories. For example, you might realise you don’t actually need to spend all $500, then shift some money to ‘Wants’ or ‘Savings’. In general, reduce your budget for categories where you underspent, and boost areas you under-budgeted.

  4. Set an improvement goal for next month

Save $50 more? Cut Grab rides in half? Pick one thing to improve.

Doing this monthly builds money awareness and helps you grow smarter with every dollar.
