Key takeaways

Career Panel Session: Careers in Technology & Artificial Intelligence

In partnership with the National Library Board

Participants attended an interactive career panel featuring professionals from the technology and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors, gaining firsthand insights into emerging career opportunities, industry trends, and the realities of working in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Key Takeaways

1. AI is transforming jobs, not simply replacing them

Panelists highlighted that AI is increasingly being integrated into workplaces across industries. Rather than replacing human workers entirely, AI is changing how work is done, making adaptability, problem-solving, and continuous learning more important than ever.

2. Technical skills matter, but human skills remain essential

While coding, data literacy, and digital competencies are valuable, employers continue to place strong emphasis on communication, collaboration, critical thinking, creativity, and empathy. These transferable skills enable individuals to work effectively alongside emerging technologies.

3. There are multiple pathways into technology careers

Participants learned that careers in tech are accessible through various routes, including university education, polytechnic pathways, professional certifications, internships, self-directed learning, and portfolio-building. Success is often driven by practical experience and a willingness to learn rather than following a single prescribed path.

4. Curiosity and lifelong learning are key

Given the pace of technological advancement, panelists encouraged youths to develop a growth mindset and remain open to learning new tools and skills throughout their careers. Continuous upskilling was identified as a critical factor for long-term career success.

5. Technology skills are increasingly relevant across industries

The discussion highlighted how AI and digital technologies are creating opportunities beyond traditional technology companies, including sectors such as healthcare, finance, education, sustainability, and the public service.

Impact on Participants

The session broadened participants' awareness of future career possibilities and provided practical insights into preparing for an AI-enabled workforce. Through direct engagement with industry professionals, participants gained a better understanding of the skills, mindsets, and experiences needed to navigate future education and career decisions with greater confidence.
