Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
  • What’s the difference between Community Librarians and Academic Librarians?
Compared to Academic Librarians, Community Librarians engage more with members of the public. They plan fun and interactive public events and also ensure the library is accessible for all. On the other hand, Academic Librarians usually work for university libraries. They assist students and professors with in-depth research, for example, by helping them find various sources for research papers.
  • Do aspiring candidates need a degree in a specific discipline to become Librarians?
Librarians do not require a Bachelor's degree in any discipline. Most Librarians learn on the job, so having a degree in any particular field may not give them an advantage in learning to be good Librarians.
  • Do Librarians only work in schools and public libraries?
Of course not. Librarians work in other settings, such as museums, historical societies and archives.
  • What problems do Librarians commonly encounter?
Some common problems Librarians may face include budget cuts, staff shortages, censorship and disruptive patrons, to name a few.

  • Are there any job advancement opportunities for Librarians in Singapore?
Yes, there are. Librarians can advance their careers by moving into management positions, specialising in a particular area of Librarianship or pursuing further education.
